Caddis flies or sedge trout fly patterns are generally found in fresh water, moth like, although they have hair with the wings high up.  Trout will feed on them generally on an evening as they are known to be nocturnal. The balloon caddis/sedge has been developed to simulate when the pupa breaks the water surface and is stationary for a couple of minutes while the adult breaks opens the pupal shell and dries its wings prior to taking flight. When the caddis hatch the emergent adult tries to swim as fast as it can to the safety of the bank. In this mad dash for survival it creates a 'V' shaped wake and the trout are on the look out for this give away sign and home in on these flies with some spectacular takes. The foam thorax cover will give some sustained floatability which means they can be skated across the water surface.
