The New Park Street Pulpit
Containing Sermons Preached and Revised by the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, Minister of the Chapel, during the year 1855.
Volume I
London: Passmore & Alabaster, 4 Paternoster Buildings, 1887.
An attractive nineteenth-century edition of the first volume of Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s New Park Street Pulpit, containing sermons from the formative opening period of his celebrated London ministry.
The volume opens with “The Immutability of God,” preached at New Park Street Chapel on 7 January 1855, and contains a substantial collection of Spurgeon’s earliest London sermons in their characteristic period format, retaining the original sermon headings, biblical texts, dates and delivery details.
Of particular interest is the striking separate title-style page for Spurgeon’s celebrated open-air sermon:
“Heaven and Hell”
described on the page as:
“An Open-Air Sermon, preached in a field, King Edward’s Road, Hackney, to a congregation of about twelve thousand persons, by the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, on Tuesday evening, September 4th, 1855.”
The page also retains the printed price “Twopence.”
This is a particularly evocative survival within the volume, vividly reflecting the enormous crowds drawn by the young Spurgeon during the earliest years of his London ministry. The leaf should be regarded as part of this later 1887 edition reproducing the original sermon presentation, rather than as a separately inserted 1855 broadside.
The volume also includes sermons such as The Immutability of God, The Sin of Unbelief, The Peculiar Sleep of the Beloved, Free-Will—A Slave, and many others from 1855.
The original binding bears Spurgeon’s gilt emblem with the motto:
“We Preach Christ and Him Crucified.”
A desirable early Spurgeon volume for collectors of Victorian theology, Baptist history, evangelical preaching, Reformed literature, nineteenth-century sermons and Charles Haddon Spurgeon material.
Please note that this is the 1887 Passmore & Alabaster edition, not the original 1855 printing.
Good antique condition, with notable wear to the original binding.
Original Victorian brown cloth boards with elaborate blind-stamped decoration and an attractive gilt pictorial device to the front reading “We Preach Christ and Him Crucified.” The gilt remains quite bright and presents very well.
The spine is faded and worn, with rubbing, fraying and some cloth loss at the head and foot, together with wear along the joints and extremities. Corners and board edges show age-related wear.
Internally, the volume is generally sound and clean for its age, with expected toning (heavily to title and final leaf) and occasional light spotting or marks. Previous owner’s inscription to the front endpaper: “Muriel J. Adams, November 1928.” There may be occasional historical notation, although none was found during inspection.
The printed C. H. Spurgeon signature appearing at the end of the preface is part of the printed book and is not an autograph.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
