An antique “Finger Common Prayer Book”. It has small embossed flowers on the leather cover and also gold page edges. Embossed in gold on the edge of the end cover binding the name “Alex Jones & Co, 154 Regent Street”; they were a prominent late-Victorian retailer known for high-quality luxury items. Title wording from the first page reads: The book of common prayer and administration of the Holy Communion. According to the use of the Church of England. Together with the Psalter, or, Psalms of David. Pointed as they are to be sung or said in churches. But without the calendar, occasional services, articles of religion. Oxford: Printed at the University Press. London – Henry Frowde, Oxford Warehouse, Amen Corner. Diam 96 mo. Cum Privilegio. Dates to late 19th century. Page numbering matches the contents page – 77-599. It measures approximately 9 cm x 3 cm x 1 cm. In very good condition with some wear in keeping with age and use – no tears or damage to the pages; end pages have small amount of foxing; the external cover has some signs of use/ rubs to the bottom edges front and back (see last photos). Please look at all the photos as they form an important part of the description. Thank you for your interest. Some of these Finger Common Prayer Books had
specific publication years 1899, 1901 and 1908; I have put the age of this
example to 1898 because Alexander Jones was present at 154 Regent Street from
1877 and he passed away in June 1900 and the business was wrapped up by August
of the same year.
