Antique Chinese Art Deco Peking Wool Rug Carpet c1920s 290x273cm Birds Floral

A beautiful and unusually large antique Chinese Art Deco / Peking hand-knotted wool carpet, believed to date from approximately the 1920s–1930s.

The carpet has a wonderful turquoise/jade-green ground with an attractive asymmetric design of flowering branches, blossoms, birds and butterflies in shades of pink, blue, cream, rust, brown and gold.

The large areas of open colour, asymmetric botanical decoration and sculpted/high-low pile are characteristic of Chinese carpets produced during the Art Deco period.

Approximate size: 290 x 273 cm (approximately 9 ft 6 in x 8 ft 11 in), excluding fringe.

The reverse shows the hand-worked construction and foundation. The decorative areas retain an attractive deep and sculpted wool pile.

CONDITION:

This is an antique carpet showing considerable age-related wear. There are areas of low/worn pile where the foundation is visible, marks and staining to the underside, wear and losses to the fringed ends, and evidence of previous attention/repair around the ends.

An old handwritten inventory-type label remains attached to the reverse.

The carpet has not been professionally cleaned or restored and is offered in its present condition.

Please study all photographs carefully, including the detailed photographs of the pile, reverse, fringe and worn areas, as these form an important part of the description.

Despite the wear, this remains a striking and highly decorative large period carpet with a particularly attractive colour palette and classic Chinese Art Deco character.

Collection preferred due to its size and weight.
