Abingdon Pottery in Illinois made many different vases and decorative housewares from 1934 to 1950.
This "Dolphin" bookend/vase - shape number #444 - was made from 1938 to 1949 and has a very art-deco design. It was finished with a matte turquoise glaze - probably "Dawn Blue" that was used from 1934 to 1938 and described in the catalog as "a delicate turquoise in waxy matt texture". An example of this shape in its hand-decorated version can be seen on page 84 of the 1997 book "Abingdon Pottery Artware" by Joe Paradis.
It is about 5-3/4 inches tall, 4-1/4 inches wide, and 3-1/4 inches front-to-back. The rectangular base is about 3-1/8 x 4-1/4 inches. It is a heavy sturdy piece weighing almost 1-1/2 pounds.
It still has an "ABINGDON CHINA MADE IN USA" silver label. The bottom shows the typical very white Abingdon clay, the early impressed ABINGDON mark that was filled with ink, and the impressed shape number 444.
It is in very good vintage condition - no chips, hairlines, or crazing - and ready to use, add to a collection, or display all on its own.
This is a duplicate from my own collection and time to move it on to someone who will enjoy it as much as I have.
