> *"Lt. Mansfield at Olympic games in California"*
**Lieutenant Clayton John Mansfield** (West Point Class of 1928) represented the United States at the X Olympiad (Los Angeles, 1932), competing in the Modern Pentathlon, which opened with the equestrian cross-country riding phase held at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.
Mansfield went on to have a distinguished military career in World War II, attaining the rank of Colonel and commanding the 66th Armored Regiment ("Hell on Wheels" / 2nd Armored Division). He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and was killed in combat during the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945. He is buried at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.
