This unusual Elgin B.W. Raymond Grade 184, Model 5, American made pocket watch is in very nice condition for its age and is running well. I say unusual because most Railroad Approved models are stem wind/lever set, but this one is stem wind/stem set, which is not common, but apparently an order-able option at one time. The visually clean, nickel movement is a 17 jewel model with serial number '7250231', dating it to approx. 1898. The watch winds, sets, runs strong and is keeping good time, though I do not know when it was last serviced. It is cased in a relatively low wear, 'Silveroid' [Nickel alloy] case with gold train inlay in the case back. It has normal surface scratches, but is generally a solid, attractive case. Case diameter is large at approx. 57mm [US 18 size]. The double sunk porcelain dial has a sub second hand at 6 o'clock and is signed 'Elgin'. It is in excellent condition, with no visible hairline cracks or chips. The crystal is original, bevelled glass with some surface scratches, but generally is still quite serviceable. Overall, this is a clean, solid antique pocket watch from a respected American company. It'd make a fine addition to any collection, or enjoy it as a regular user....you won't be disappointed!
