Black Americana~QUARTERS at Hermitage
~ Savannah, Georgia,
Photographed ~J.N. WILSON
****
The Hermitage Plantation was a major 19th-century agricultural and manufacturing site located just north of Savannah, Georgia along the Savannah River. Known primarily for its production of rice, lumber, and iconic "Savannah Gray" bricks, it was owned and developed extensively by Scots-born builder Henry McAlpin starting in 1814.
The Quarters Structure: Unlike most plantation ~Black Americana quarters in the American South, which were constructed of timber, the Black Americana quarters at The Hermitage were built out of solid brick manufactured right on the estate's brickworks. Approximately 50 to 52 double-dwelling brick cabins lined an avenue of live oaks leading up to the main house.
In the late 1860s through the 1880s, photographers Jerome N. Wilson (J.N. Wilson) and O. Pierre Havens frequently photographed the brick cabins and grounds. These stereoviews were marketed heavily to post-Civil War tourists and collectors
The main house and quarters remained standing long after the Civil War into the 1920s and 1930s. In 1935, industrialist Henry Ford purchased the property, demolished the remaining structures, and moved thousands of the historic Savannah Gray bricks to build his estate in Richmond Hill, Georgia. Two of the original brick quarters were dismantled, moved, and reconstructed at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, where they remain on display today.

I also deal & collect Early Bottles since 1964 & Selling on EBay since 1998 and sometimes they are combined with the Stereoviews. As with me, some collect both of them, as History is the interest and they are just the vehicle to learn and enjoy the views.
