An unread copy of this interesting illustrated chapbook from acclaimed Hungarian author & screenwriter László Krasznahorkai (b. 1954).  He has written a series of highly-rated books, starting with his 1985 debut 'Satantango ', which was memorably adapted into a 7-hour film by director Béla Tarr in 1994 (and finally translated into English in 2012).   He won the 2015 International Booker Prize, the final author to do so for their body of work, rather than for an individual novel.



** On 9 October 2025, he was announced as the Winner of the 2025 Nobel Prize for Literature by the Nobel Academy in Stockholm.  He is only the 2nd Hungarian winner of the most prestigious Prize in the literary world (after the late Imre Kertész in 2002) **







'Animalinside ' published by Sylph Editions in London in 2012 (in conjunction with The Center for Writers & Translators at the American University in Paris), 2nd edition but the first trade edition (after an opening limited-edition in 2011 which had a black and white cover and no dustjacket), large modern chapbook (measures 9.5in x 6in), 41 pages.  Opening 2-page preface by Irish author Colm Toibin.  This work was first published in Hungary in 2010.  Translated from the Hungarian by Ottilie Mulzet.






Internally in As New unread condition, with no inscriptions or markings.   A sewn chapbook.


This is an interesting collaboration between the author and German abstract artist Max Neumann (b. 1949), who provides 14 colour illustrations within, as well as the black & white image on the frontispiece (which is also on the bellyband).   Neumann worked with the author again on the 'Chasing Homer ' words/art/music novella published in English-translation in 2021.


Externally in fine condition, the chapbook has plain black card covers housed within a cream paper dustjacket. Original belly band present.

This cahier is the result of a collaboration undertaken specially for The Cahiers Series, between a writer and a painter. Hungarian novelist Laszlo Krasznahorkai responds with fourteen texts to fourteen depictions of a strange and ill-formed creature made by his friend. the renowned German painter Max Neumann. 



The texts speak from within the head of Neumann's creature that seems to be menacing existence itself; serving, as they do so, to confirm Susan Sontag's estimate of Krasznahorkai as The Hungarian Master of Apocalypse.  All fourteen of Neumann's paintings are reproduced alongside the texts (translated by Ottilie Mulzet).  The cahier is introduced with a preface by Irish novelist Colm Toibin.
