4.8 lb Rattlesnake Howardite Display Slab NV Rare Thick Collector Specimen
This is a beautiful 4.8-pound display slab of Nevada Howardite in the highly recognizable coloration commonly known as Rattlesnake. This piece was shared with me by "Comstock Jerro" and is an unusually substantial example of this fascinating local material.
Howardite can produce some of the most remarkable cabochons, with intricate patterning and a wonderful range of pinks, salmons, yellows, mustards, creams, and contrasting agate veining. It is also notoriously challenging material to work with because it can fracture quite easily during cutting and preparation. (The last photo shows examples of cabochons made from Howardite, including the Rattlesnake coloration seen in this specimen. Cabochons are shown for reference only and are not included.)
That characteristic makes this particular specimen especially interesting. Finding a Howardite slab of this size and thickness that has remained intact is highly unusual, making this an exceptional piece for display or a Nevada mineral collection. For clarification, this Nevada material is not to be confused with the meteorite material also known as Howardite. This is the locally known lapidary and collector material found here in Nevada.
