Vintage Japanese warship-shaped metal paperweight made to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Meiji era.

The underside is marked in Japanese:

明治百年祭記念
“Meiji 100th Anniversary Commemoration”

This commemorative piece dates from around 1968, marking 100 years from the beginning of the Meiji era in 1868.

The model is cast in a heavy copper-alloy or brass-like metal with a gold-tone plated finish. The exact metal composition is unknown.

Size / Weight

  • Overall length: approx. 9"
  • Weight: approx. 435 g

The surface shows age-related darkening, oxidation, spotting, and areas of greenish corrosion, especially around the deck details and recessed areas. There are also scratches and wear to the gold-tone finish.

The underside is relatively smooth and clearly retains the commemorative inscription.

Because of wartime and immediate postwar metal shortages, decorative metal commemorative objects of this type were far less commonly produced during the 1940s. This later Meiji centennial piece reflects the return of substantial cast-metal commemorative items in postwar Japan.

A substantial vintage Japanese naval-themed display piece suitable as a paperweight, desk ornament, or collectible.
