A little history:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued WPL numbers exclusively between 1941 and 1959. Any garment bearing a WPL number was manufactured during or shortly after this mid-century window.

100% acrylic hats were produced by Everitt between 1952 and 1959. While the Federal Trade Commission assigned the WPL 7647 code to Everitt during the 1941–1959 window, commercial acrylic fiber was not widely available or used in consumer fashion until the early 1950's. Chenille spun from 100% acrylic became highly popular during this specific decade because it allowed manufacturers to create plush, velvet-like winter wear that was completely mothproof, lightweight, and easy to wash compared to traditional silk or rayon chenille.
