Set in 1851, Elvira’s Haunted Hills follows Elvira and her companion Zou Zou as they travel through the Carpathian Mountains on their way to Paris. After accepting shelter at a mysterious castle belonging to Lord Vladimere Hellsubus, Elvira becomes entangled in the eccentric family’s supernatural secrets, romantic complications, and increasingly bizarre events.

The film deliberately draws from the atmosphere and conventions of classic Gothic horror, particularly the elaborate castle films associated with Roger Corman and Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. Richard O’Brien, best known for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, joins Peterson in a production filled with horror references, slapstick, double entendres, and Elvira’s signature style.
