Antique Early 19th Century Blue & White Transferware Meat Platter – c.1820–1840
A beautiful antique blue and white transfer-printed earthenware platter, believed to be English Staffordshire and dating from approximately 1820–1840.
The platter has a wonderfully detailed romantic landscape scene depicting a large castle/church complex beside a river, a substantial multi-arched stone bridge, fishermen in a small boat and dramatic mature trees. The surrounding border continues the architectural and woodland scenery.
The soft blue underglaze transfer and pearlware-type body are characteristic of early 19th-century English transferware.
The underside is unmarked, so I have not attributed this piece to a particular manufacturer. Many genuine pieces of early Staffordshire transferware were produced without a maker's mark.
Condition: This is an approximately 180–200-year-old piece and naturally shows signs of age and use.
There is extensive fine crazing throughout the glaze, age-related staining/discolouration, surface scratches and general wear. There is also a noticeable chip/loss to the rim, shown clearly in the close-up photograph.
An old cord/hanging arrangement has been attached to the reverse, presumably so the platter could be displayed on a wall. I would regard this as a later addition rather than original to the manufacture.
I cannot see an obvious major crack in the photographs supplied, but please inspect all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
