Bold yellow, red and blue decoration gives this diminutive pelican brooch a cheerful visual impact. Depicted in profile with an exaggerated bill, bright blue throat pouch, and jaunty red cap, the bird has the expressive, cartoon-inspired character of novelty jewellery.

Made from lightweight pressed metal with a silver-toned finish, the raised design has been embellished with cold-applied paint rather than fired enamel. The reverse is stamped HONG KONG. A safety-pin-style brooch fitting is secured within formed metal loops on the reverse.

The brooch measures 2.5 × 1.5 cm (0.98 × 0.59 in). It shows areas of paint loss and general wear consistent with its age, although the enlarged photographs make the wear appear more pronounced than it does at actual size.

The pelican has long been associated with generosity, care and self-sacrifice, although this light-hearted interpretation places greater emphasis on humour and character.
