This is the Contax G2 Black 35mm autofocus rangefinder camera body.
Introduced in 1996 as the flagship successor to the original G1, the Contax G2 represents the absolute peak of electronic 35mm rangefinder technology. While the standard production model was finished in champagne titanium, the highly coveted Black variant features a dark, durable electro-deposited black finish over its solid titanium exterior covers. Upgraded substantially over its predecessor, the G2 introduced an advanced dual-autofocus mechanism utilizing both continuous active infrared and passive phase-detection AF systems, allowing for lightning-fast and highly precise focus lock even on low-contrast subjects or in dark environments.
The chassis houses an electronically controlled focal-plane shutter capable of reaching a blistering 1/4000 second maximum shutter speed (and up to 1/6000 second in Aperture-Priority AE mode), alongside an integrated motor drive supporting continuous high-speed film advance at up to 4 frames per second. Its unique real-image zooming viewfinder automatically matches the focal length and optical parallax of mounted G-mount Carl Zeiss lenses—ranging from 28mm to 90mm—while displaying precise distance readouts and exposure metering inside the finder window. Combining legendary Zeiss optical compatibility, rugged titanium construction, and rapid electronic automation in an elegant stealth housing, the Contax G2 Black remains one of the most sophisticated 35mm rangefinders ever engineered.
