“Patria O Muerte”, translated as “Homeland or Death”, became a prominent revolutionary slogan in Cuba in 1960. It expressed the idea of defending the country and the revolution, even in circumstances involving personal sacrifice.
Later in 1960, “Venceremos” (“We Will Prevail”) was added, creating the longer phrase “Patria O Muerte, Venceremos”. The expanded slogan became closely associated with revolutionary Cuba and was used internationally, including by Che Guevara during his 1964 address to the United Nations.
