Beautiful antique Victorian fitted sewing or ladies’ work box, dating to approximately the mid-to-late 19th century.
The box is crafted from figured wood veneer, possibly walnut, and features a folding brass carrying handle with an engraved monogram plaque reading “C.S.” The interior includes a mirror beneath the lid, burgundy velvet fitted compartments, divided storage sections and a pull-out lower drawer.
The impressions in the velvet show where the original sewing implements were stored, likely including scissors, a thimble, needle cases, bodkins and other small tools. The original sewing accessories are no longer present.
Measures approximately 8 inches long by 5¼ inches wide.
Condition is consistent with age and use. The exterior has scratches, finish wear, discoloration and patina. The velvet lining shows fading, staining, impressions and wear. There is wear and minor damage to portions of the interior trim and lower drawer. The lock is present, but no key is included. This listing is for the empty sewing box only.
