A substantial nineteenth-century collected edition of the works of John Howe (1630–1705), one of the major English Puritan and Nonconformist divines, accompanied by Edmund Calamy's extensive account of Howe's life.
Howe was educated at Cambridge and Oxford and became domestic chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. Following the Restoration he became an important figure among the English Nonconformists and is remembered particularly for the theological depth and breadth of his writings.
This very large volume runs to over 1,300 pages when the preliminary biography and index are included and brings together a considerable body of Howe's theological and devotional writings.

An imposing but externally worn copy in an very amateur later binding.
The spine has applied/sticker lettering. There is a conspicuous and rather crude repair to the front inner hinge. The rear hinge is beginning to split/separate from the top, as shown in the photographs. The binding should consequently be handled with care.
The substantial text block itself remains firm overall, although several leaves protrude slightly from the fore-edge. The leaves are generally clean and readily legible but are age-toned/tanned throughout, with occasional marks and spotting consistent with a book of this age.
