Original Bristol and Exeter Railway Company £500 debenture bond issued on 9 April 1857 and due for repayment on 21 June 1860.
The bond names Thomas Bult Cogan of Bristol as a tanner and George Pavey of Bristol as an accountant and retains period manuscript entries, signatures, revenue embossing and a Bristol dated stamp.
Thomas Bult Cogan was born in Somerset in 1809, worked in the Bristol leather trade as a tanner and later leather factor, and died at Clevedon in 1875 with his probate estate recorded at under £40,000.
The reverse records receipt of the £500 principal and interest in 1860 and carries Cogan’s signature, while the original company seals have been removed and the document shows historic folds, edge wear, small tears and cancellation markings.
