Antique John Chatillon & Sons 50 lb brass face hanging spring scale, stamped Makers New York U.S.A. and Not Legal For Use In Trade. Chatillon was the leading American maker of spring balances from the mid 1800s onward, and this pinned brass face style with the iron body is the classic early 20th century farm and general store scale.
This one comes straight from the barn with all the character that implies. The brass face is actually remarkably legible with the full JOHN CHATILLON & SONS MAKERS NEW YORK U.S.A. stamping and NOT LEGAL FOR USE IN TRADE clearly readable, and the graduation from 0 to 50 lb in 5 lb increments sharp and easy to follow. The face has a dark tarnished patina with green and rust toned staining and scattered corrosion spots. The iron body, ring, and S hook show heavy surface rust with active corrosion and pitting, giving the piece a rugged, honest barn found look. Old wire is wrapped around the hanging ring from its years of use. The original iron pointer is in place, resting at zero.
