There’s much to love about this men’s Bulova wristwatch. With the backing of such a distinguished name in watchmaking, it’s impossible to turn your attention away from this one. Bulova has managed to perfectly marry classic refinement with executive flair in this exquisite design. DETAILS:

Case:            Round, though noticeably different and highly sophisticated with broad almost horn-like lugs and sweeping scalloped lips to the edge of the crystal. The all stainless steel case and case back have been cleaned & repolished and fitted with a new acrylic crystal. In general, the case looks great with only modest scratches/wear commensurate with age. The case is not waterproof.

 

Crown:         New, newly acquired Bulova stock. Signed. Excellent.

 

Dial:             Very eye-catching & immaculate. The black sunburst dial is in its original condition, accentuating and complementing the case. The hour positions are marked with arrow shaped batons with two at the twelve o’clock. All are steel. The ‘Bulova’ name, ’23 Jewels’ and ‘selfwinding’ are in white. The hour positions along with the hands have been relumed and now glow well in the dark. The dial is showing modest age-related wear.

 

Hands:         Hour, minute & sweep second hands are all original, steel, pitched ‘Alpha’ style.

 

Movement:  BULOVA high quality Swiss manual and selfwinding movement. This is a fine classic 10BPAC calibre with 23 jewels marked ‘L7’ for 1957. The movement allows for both manual and self-winding. It is designed to prevent over-winding. The movement has been cleaned, oiled & adjusted, and at the time of listing is running well keeping good time ready to wear. As with all vintage watches regular servicing is recommended.

 

Size:            Round, diameter is approx. 30.53mm (excluding the crown), Approx. 49.74mm lug to lug.

 

Band:           A new 16mm black leather band with silver tone buckle has been fitted complementing the watch perfectly.

 

Box:             This watch comes with its original hard case presentation box which is remarkable to have survived the years together. The box is a polished dark navy-blue celluloid, embellished with gold tone ridges to the edges of the lid and base which extend into the inside giving rise to an almost theatrical appearance. The gold tone effect Bulova name plate is given pride of place on the lid.

 

                    The sprung lid opens as it should to reveal the sumptuous interior lined with plush navy-blue velvet matching the exterior. The underside of the lid is lined with dark blue silk on which ‘Bulova’ is marked in large gold tone letters, ‘selfwinding’ and ‘waterproof’ are in white text. ’23 Jewels’ to the right-hand side is highlighted with silver tone dots. The watch is mounted centrally with the mount covered in the same sumptuous navy-blue velvet. The box is showing age related scuffs, scratches and wear.

General comments:

This ensemble was an estate acquisition and a remarkable find. The watch comes with its original hard cased presentation box being so wonderful to have survived the years intact.

The watch is a delightful example of a Bulova ‘23’ from the 1957 which has been restored to appeal once again. The repolished stainless steel case with sweeping lugs and eye-catching black sunburst dial make the watch highly attractive. The watch has a pleasing classic look and feel that simply cannot be found in newer watches.

• This is a vintage manual & self-winding watch with a movement from the 1957 and as such it will not have the accuracy of a contemporary quartz movement therefore perfect time accuracy cannot be expected. If you want a watch to simply put on and go – then perhaps this is not the best choice you could make – however, if you want a period timepiece that you can admire and enjoy on each occasion you wear it, then this is a great item.
