1935 Conitz General Store Bluegrass North Dakota Bank Checks Lot of 6 Ephemera
Rare North Dakota Ghost Town Ephemera. Large checks measure 8 1/4”x 3”
The Conitz General Store was a central fixture in the local history of Bluegrass, North Dakota, operating primarily during the first half of the 20th century. The store was operated by George and Alma Conitz. Located in Morton County, the building functioned as both a gas station and a general store. It served as the lifeblood for local homesteaders and farmers, saving them from having to make the 10-mile trek southeast to New Salem for basic necessities and fuel. While early family records indicate some initial business challenges for early generations (such as Hilmar Conitz), the general store eventually became well-established. George and Alma ran the store until at least the mid-1940s, with local families noting that transitions and departures from the immediate Bluegrass area spiked around 1946.
Photos of building are from the internet. Not included with checks reference only. I think the building has since been burned to the ground, for local fire department practices.
