Antique Fine Portrait Miniature Distinguished Lady Gilt Cherub Frame French Style

A fine antique portrait miniature of a distinguished woman, beautifully presented in an elaborate gilt-metal frame with a delightful surround of small winged cherub heads.

The sitter has a composed, direct gaze and softly curled silver hair swept upward beneath a dark hair ornament. Her richly embellished, high-necked dress features intricate decorative trim, complemented by small earrings and a brooch at her throat. Delicate coloring in her face and carefully rendered highlights in her hair and clothing give this intimate portrait considerable character.

The frame is particularly striking. A large winged cherub crowns the oval, while numerous smaller cherub heads nestle among pierced scrolling foliage around the sides and bottom. The intricate openwork provides an airy, lace-like surround, contrasting beautifully with the broad gilt inner border.

The reverse retains a metal backing and hinged easel support with curved feet and a floral accent. A stamped mark is present on the back and is shown in the photographs; the maker remains unidentified.

Age and Origin: Believed to date to approximately 1880–1910. French in style and possibly French in origin, although the country of manufacture has not been confirmed.

Medium: The portrait appears to incorporate hand-applied coloring and painted details, possibly over a photographic base. The exact medium and support have not been verified.

Approximate Measurements:

* Frame: 6¼ inches tall × 5¼ inches wide

* Visible portrait: 3 inches tall × 2¼ inches wide

Condition: Presents beautifully, with age-related wear to the gilt finish, scattered scratches and darkening, and finish losses around the inner oval border. Surface texture and small marks are visible in the portrait close-ups. The cherub and scrolling openwork decoration appears complete in the photographs.
