THATCHER`S DAIRY Martinsburg, West Virginia, WV, W. VA Wood Milk Crate
The
dairy was run by various members of the Thatcher family on their farm,
"Homestead" near Hedgesville on Apple Pie Ridge. The family were not
only farmers, but they had apple orchards and dairy cows. Harlan C.
Thatcher (1875-1929) entered the dairy business around 1925 after having
devoted most of his time to farming and the orchard. He died in 1929
but his brother, Charles Wilson Thatcher continued in the business along
with their sister Minnie F. Thatcher (1873-1965) and Harlan's sons,
Edward Newton (1909-1969) and Harlan Cushwa II (1916-1966). By the 1950s
the dairy was located at 310 Winchester Avenue. By the late 1950s
Guernsey Milk Products and Ice Cream were also being made there.
