Distinctive late-war style Japanese Navy short field gunto koshirae.
The original sword blade has been removed and replaced with an alloy imitation blade. This item is offered as a historical military mounting and display piece, not as an original Japanese sword.
The wooden scabbard is the later single-ring type and is fitted with a black leather field cover. The metal fastener from the retaining strap that secures the hilt to the scabbard is missing, leaving a hole in the leather.
The naval-style tsuba consists of a thick brass center plate sandwiched between two thin plates believed to be copper. It is accompanied by two aluminum seppa.
Most of the ray-skin nodules on the hilt have worn away. The tsuka-ito was coated and hardened with a lacquer-like material for reinforcement. This type of treatment is often found on both Japanese Army and Navy field swords and is believed to have been used in response to wartime experience, helping prevent the wrapping from fraying or loosening when wet.
The menuki feature a group of three cherry blossoms. The pommel fitting is particularly distinctive, with a relief design of a Hannya mask.
Its unusually short dimensions and practical field construction give this koshirae considerable character.
