Antique Dugan Coin Spot Black Amethyst Carnival Glass Pedestal Compote Bowl

A striking early twentieth-century carnival glass pedestal compote, attributed to the Dugan Glass Company of the United States and identified as the Coin Spot pattern, sometimes referred to as Thumbprint.

The bowl is formed from deep amethyst glass that appears almost black under ordinary lighting. Its iridescent surface reveals vivid shades of blue, green, gold, copper, red and purple as the angle and lighting change.

Broad moulded panels decorated with graduated oval coin spots surround the bowl, while the deeply ruffled rim creates an attractive flowing profile. The short moulded stem and substantial circular pedestal foot complete the distinctive form.

Dugan Glass Company produced carnival glass in Indiana, Pennsylvania, during the early twentieth century. The attribution is based on comparison with documented Dugan Coin Spot examples displaying the same panelled bowl, graduated oval decoration, moulded stem, circular foot and ruffled rim. As this example is unmarked, the Dugan attribution is presented with approximately 95% confidence.
