The figure shows a miner in a flat cap, kneeling at the coal face and swinging his pick, a tribute to the hewers who cut coal by hand in Britain's pits. It's cast from coal set in resin, which gives it a lovely glossy black finish, with the rough texture of the coal seam contrasting against the smooth detail of the miner.

The original gold E & J Mining Memories "Made with British Coal" label is on the base.
