Like New Appears unread. Clean, tight copy with sharp corners and no noticeable flaws. Dust jacket (if present) crisp and bright.
Very Good Light signs of handling or shelf wear. May have minor rubbing, a small crease, or a name inside, but overall a clean, solid copy.
Good Noticeable wear but still a fully usable reading copy. May include creases, moderate edge wear, small stains, or limited writing/highlighting. Any major issues will be noted.
Acceptable Heavier wear with clear cosmetic flaws such as creasing, significant edge wear, heavier staining, or extensive writing/highlighting. Still complete and readable; major defects will be described.
Ex-Library / Remainder May include library stamps, stickers, pocket remains, or remainder marks. These will be mentioned in the listing when present.

Condition Description

Antique hardcover copy with age and wear. Green decorative cloth boards show rubbing, staining, edge wear, and fraying at the spine ends and corners. Front hinge is weakened with exposed binding material, though the cover remains attached. Pages are age-toned with scattered foxing and staining. Former owner stamp and faint pencil writing appear on the front endpaper. 

Description

Antique one-volume edition of The Works of William Shakespeare, published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., New York and Boston.

The title page identifies this as the American Edition, based on the text of Clark and Wright, with a copious glossary, an index to familiar passages, and an index to the characters in each play.

This substantial volume contains Shakespeare’s plays and poems in a single book, including Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, and many others, followed by the poems, sonnets, glossary, and indexes. 

The green cloth binding features an elaborate black-and-gilt decorative design on the front board and gilt decoration and lettering on the spine. The front endpaper bears an old ownership stamp reading “Fred Johnson, Santa Rosa, Cal.”

The book is undated on the title page. Bibliographic records for this Thomas Y. Crowell American Edition identify it as circa 1914, so I would list the date as c. 1914 rather than claim an exact publication year.

A visually appealing early-20th-century Shakespeare volume with considerable age and wear, suitable for a collector, decorative library, Shakespeare collection, or restoration project.
