Captured in a long, powerful stride, this silver-grey tiger brooch has a wonderfully sculptural presence, with its stretched body, forward-reaching paw and alert face creating a real sense of movement. The moulded stripes and facial details are picked out by an unevenly brushed silver-grey finish, with darker colour remaining in the recessed areas to emphasise the tiger’s shape and texture. Made from cast resin, the brooch was bought for my mum in 1989 from Sri Batik, my Tante Gerda’s gift shop in Burnie, Tasmania. Mum wore it to a family function that year, and it has remained in as-new condition since. The surface treatment has a dry-brushed appearance, allowing the raised areas to catch the lighter colour while the deeper moulded lines remain dark. It features a standard horizontal bar pin on the reverse and measures 8 cm long x 2 cm high (3.15 x 0.79 inches). Its elongated profile makes the tiger appear almost frozen mid-leap, while the tiger motif itself traditionally carries associations with strength, courage and independence.
