JOHANN ANTON CASTELL (1810–1867) — ORIGINAL 1848 OIL ON CANVAS
Offered from a private collection is an original 1848 landscape painting by German Romantic landscape painter Johann Anton Castell (1810–1867).
This substantial antique oil presents an atmospheric Mediterranean/Italianate landscape, with towering cypress trees, characteristic umbrella pines, classical stone architecture and ruins, abundant flowering vegetation, distant mountains, and a small architectural structure positioned dramatically on the far hilltop.
The painting is signed and dated 1848, placing it firmly within Castell’s mature working period.
Castell studied landscape painting under Johan Christian Clausen Dahl, one of the major figures of German Romanticism. Castell became particularly known for expansive landscapes combining carefully observed architecture, vegetation, dramatic terrain and atmospheric distance.
Of particular relevance is Castell’s documented 1842 Mediterranean Landscape with Ruins, an oil-on-canvas composition associated with the landscape around Taormina, Sicily. Castell is also documented painting Italian subjects including Lake Como. The present work shares the broader Mediterranean vocabulary found within this portion of his oeuvre: ruins and architecture integrated into the landscape, Mediterranean vegetation, distant mountainous terrain and pronounced atmospheric depth.
The painting demonstrates considerable detail throughout. The foreground vegetation is constructed from numerous individually applied strokes of yellow, red, pink, ochre and green, with areas of pronounced paint texture. Tall dark cypress trees create a strong vertical counterpoint to the broad horizontal landscape, while umbrella pines frame the distant mountains and architecture. The mountains progressively soften into blue-gray atmospheric tones, producing convincing depth.

Historical & Collector Significance
Castell’s authenticated landscapes are represented in European collections and continue to appear through established European auction houses. Documented works from 1848—the same year as the present painting—are known, making the date especially relevant when considering the work within Castell’s chronology.
His documented Mediterranean subjects are particularly compelling because they represent the 19th-century European fascination with the Italian landscape and its combination of classical architecture, ruins, distinctive vegetation and dramatic terrain.
The painting remains on its aged stretched canvas, with the reverse displaying substantial period discoloration and spotting consistent with its long history. The front exhibits age-related surface wear, craquelure/texture, scattered marks and other evidence of age visible in the photographs. Please examine all detailed photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A remarkable 178-year-old European landscape and an opportunity to acquire an original Johann Anton Castell dating to 1848.
