This is an incredible piece of California design history and mid-century Americana. These genuine 1940s or 1950s herringbone twill (HBT) workwear coveralls were made by the historic, highly collectible San Francisco manufacturer P.E. Stevens, located at 3010 Clement Street.

What makes this specific piece truly remarkable is its provenance. These coveralls were personally owned and worn by Alta Tingle, the legendary Bay Area taste-maker, landscape designer, and founder of the iconic Berkeley store, The Gardener. Given her celebrated career in California landscape design, this heavy-duty garment likely served as her personal, authentic gardening uniform. It represents a beautiful crossover of mid-century industrial utility and Northern California design heritage.

The garment features a beautiful all-cotton Herringbone Twill (HBT) weave with incredible texture and drape. It includes the original pre-ZIP code 2-digit postal zone tag, heavy-duty original hardware, and contrast chain-stitching throughout.

This piece is in authentic vintage condition with magnificent character. It features minor fading and authentic patina consistent with landscape and gardening work, but has no major structural damage. Please see all photos for details.

The vintage tag size is 34, which fits like a modern Women's Small/Medium or a Men's Extra Small.
