Drawn by Charles Preuss under the order of the Senate of the United States and lithographed by E. Weber & Co. of Baltimore, this monumental map captures the American West on the brink of the Gold Rush and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It outlines Frémont's exploring routes (including 1842 and 1846 tracks), elevation figures, an inset profile of the traveling route from the South Pass of the Rocky Mountains to the Bay of San Francisco, and detailed topography of the Oregon Territory, Great Basin, and Upper California.
