General Sir Robert Thomas Wilson (1777-1849) served in Sir David Baird’s expeditionary force in South Africa against the Dutch. Wilson had a varied military career, commanding Abercromby’s cavalry in Egypt (1801), and commanding a Spanish brigade at the Battle of Talavera in the Peninsular War. He was Governor of Gibraltar 1842-49. He was the author of the popular History of the British Expedition to Egypt (1801 and later editions), travel diaries, memoirs and pamphlets.
