A fascinating and substantial 17th-century French work of Catholic philosophy and theology, published in Paris in 1693 and preserved in an attractive early full vellum binding.
The 1693 Paris edition, published by Louis Roulland, is independently recorded in institutional collections.
The title may be translated approximately as:
“The Method of Studying and Teaching Philosophy in a Christian and Sound Manner, in Relation to the Christian Religion and the Scriptures.”
Thomassin's purpose was to examine philosophy within a specifically Christian intellectual framework, bringing philosophical learning into relationship with Christian revelation and Scripture.
The work surveys the development of philosophy and discusses numerous ancient philosophical schools and thinkers, including Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and Epicureans, alongside questions of morality, natural philosophy, politics and religion.
Rather than rejecting classical philosophy outright, Thomassin sought to assess philosophical learning from the standpoint of Christian theology. Modern scholarship consequently discusses his thought specifically in terms of a distinctive “Christian philosophy,” in which his religious and philosophical concerns were closely connected.
Louis Thomassin (1619–1695) was an important French Catholic theologian, scholar and priest of the Oratory. Born at Aix-en-Provence, he entered the Oratory while still very young and subsequently taught literature and theology, including at Saumur and later at the Seminary of Saint-Magloire in Paris.
He produced major works on theology, ecclesiastical history and discipline as well as a series concerned with methods of studying and teaching subjects including philosophy, history and the humanities. His considerable learning earned him a substantial reputation among later theological scholars.

The volume retains its attractive red-sprinkled page edges.
A genuine antique volume now more than 330 years old, showing the expected signs of considerable age and use.
Bound in what appears to be period full vellum, with an old title label to the spine. The vellum has general age-darkening, soiling, staining, rubbing and marks, together with some wear and bumping around the extremities. There is an old paper library/reference label attached to the rear board.

Internally there is age-toning , occasional spotting, staining and other marks. Some leaves show creasing and other signs of age and handling. The text nevertheless remains remarkably clear and readable.
The red-sprinkled edges retain considerable colour.
