THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER
with the Psalter or Psalms of David
Early 19th century, c.1825
Illustrated with engraved plates
Contemporary full calf binding
An attractive early-19th-century illustrated edition of the Book of Common Prayer, together with the Psalter or Psalms of David.
The volume contains a number of engraved biblical illustrations. One surviving plate, depicting Samuel, carries the imprint:
“London: Published by B. Blake, 13 Paternoster Row” and is dated 1825.
The original general title page appears to be wanting, so an exact publication date cannot be stated with certainty. The book is therefore conservatively dated c.1825 on the evidence of the dated engraving.
An attractive period volume in a full calf leather binding, with decorative gilt ruling to the boards and gilt decoration and compartments to the spine. The page edges have an unusual decorative spotted finish.
The surviving engraved title/sectional title is elaborately printed and reads in part:
The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, according to the Use of the United Church of England and Ireland, together with the Psalter or Psalms of David.
A pleasing Georgian-era devotional volume with considerable character, particularly suitable for collectors of antique Bibles, prayer books, Anglican history and early nineteenth-century religious printing.
Please note particularly: the front hinge is cracked and the front board is partially detached from the top. The binding is therefore weakened and the book must be opened and handled with care.
The leather binding otherwise shows general rubbing, scuffing, scratches and wear consistent with age, including wear and losses at the corners, edges and spine extremities.
The general title page appears to be lacking, preventing positive identification of the exact edition.
Internally there is general age-related toning, foxing, spotting, staining and occasional marks. There is an early handwritten inscription to the front blank. The engraved plates show some age-related spotting and marks but remain attractive.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
