Day was the founder and longtime editor of The Rudder, one of the most influential early American yachting magazines, and an important advocate of offshore sailing and ocean racing. He later helped establish the Bermuda Race and became well known as a yachtsman, sailing writer, and sea poet.
A particularly appealing association of author and subject: this collection of maritime verse is inscribed by Day with his characteristically nautical wish for “a fair wind and a willing sea.”
