Written and directed by Clive Barker, Hellraiser follows the discovery of a mysterious puzzle box capable of opening a gateway to a nightmarish realm inhabited by the Cenobites. The film introduced audiences to a completely different vision of supernatural horror built around obsession, pain, desire and the terrifying consequences of opening the box.
Released in 1987, Hellraiser became one of the defining horror films of the decade and launched a long-running franchise. Doug Bradley’s Pinhead became one of horror cinema’s most recognizable figures, while the film’s practical effects, Cenobite designs and uncompromising visual style established Clive Barker as a major voice in modern horror.
1988 New World Video Original Release
This is the collectible 1988 New World Video original U.S. VHS release of Hellraiser, issued shortly after the film’s 1987 theatrical release.
The original slipcase features the classic early Pinhead artwork, with the Lead Cenobite holding the glowing Lament Configuration puzzle box against a dark blue background surrounded by chains and hooks. The front also prominently features the Stephen King endorsement and the original New World Video branding.
The cassette retains its original New World Video Hellraiser face and spine labels, along with surviving vintage video-store inventory and security stickers.
This 1988 New World Video edition represents the film’s original U.S. VHS release, predating the later Starmaker, Anchor Bay and other home-video editions. The combination of the original New World packaging, iconic Pinhead artwork and the importance of the film itself makes this one of the more desirable early Hellraiser VHS editions.

The original New World Video slipcase retains strong color and excellent original Pinhead artwork and presents nicely for a horror VHS of this age.
There is visible age-related shelf and handling wear throughout the packaging, including edge and corner rubbing, small areas of paper loss, surface wear and creasing. The upper and lower corners show noticeable wear, particularly around the spine and opening edges. A vintage orange price/inventory sticker remains on the lower spine.
The VHS cassette retains its original New World Video face label and original Hellraiser spine label. Vintage inventory markings and a “Please Rewind This Tape” sticker remain on the cassette, as shown in the photographs. The cassette shell shows normal vintage handling wear.
