McClelland worked as an ScO ("Ground Astronaut") on hundreds of manned and unmanned U.S. space missions during his 34 years (1958-1992) with NASA at Cape Canaveral in Florida and was a member of the Mercury, Gemini, Skylab, and Apollo teams. Adapter section of spacecraft (lower half) contains the OAMS (orbit attitude and maneuvering system). Used during orbital flight and docking and rendezvous maneuvers, adapter is jettisoned before re-entry of spacecraft. The RCS (re-entry control system) is composed of two separate identical sets of eight engines each, one set acting as a backup system. Installed in forward compartment, RCS is operated to assure that the spacecraft is in correct position during re-entry. Drawing shows location of engines, positive expulsion propellant tanks, and pressurizing systems of both the OAMS and the RCS.
