A charming and highly decorative British collector’s set, complete for play with 144 painted wooden tiles. The symbols and colours remain clear and attractive, with an appealing period patina.

IMPORTANT :

The set originally had only three 6 Circles tiles instead of four. To make it fully playable, one matching blank spare tile found in the box was carefully hand-painted to recreate the missing 6 Circles tile.

An additional tile, hand-marked by a previous owner, is also included and has been preserved as part of the set’s history.

The tiles marked “P” are the four White Dragons; they are not missing or unfinished tiles.

Some history : 

Modern Mah-Jongg developed in China during the 19th century and became an international craze in the early 1920s. The wording “The 1,000 Year Old Game of China” printed on the box is attractive period advertising rather than a literal historical date.

Vintage Western sets were sometimes supplied with blank spare tiles so a lost or damaged tile could be replaced. This traditional practical solution has been used here to restore the playable set.

Instead of bone or bamboo scoring sticks found in some older sets, this Chad Valley edition contains lightweight coloured cardboard counters. The colours indicate different scoring denominations; period Western systems commonly used values such as 10, 100, 500 and 1,000 points.

A characterful British vintage set, ideal for a collector, period-games enthusiast or anyone wishing to play Mah-Jongg with an authentic mid-century set.
