Designed as the standard prime lens for the compact Leica CL and Minolta XE-CL / CLE rangefinder bodies, it features a fast
f/2.0 maximum aperture in an ultra-compact "pancake" lens housing weighing under 110 grams.
Built around a classic 6-element Summicron-type optical formula, the lens delivers high contrast, rich color rendition, and exceptional center sharpness even when wide open. The later second-generation version (produced for the Minolta CLE) upgraded to multi-coating on all glass surfaces and incorporated a standard 40.5mm filter thread with standard mechanical camming, replacing the unconventional thread and steep focusing cam of the original Summicron-C version.
Equipped with a quick-focus tab on the aperture barrel and a versatile 40mm focal length—sitting perfectly between a classic 35mm wide-angle and 50mm standard perspective—the M-Rokkor 40mm f/2 remains a highly regarded, budget-friendly alternative to traditional Leica Summicron glass for both M-mount rangefinder cameras and adapted mirrorless bodies.
