Complete Description
Original Smith & Wesson factory literature for the K-22 Masterpiece Revolver Model No. 17.
This period factory foldout is headed “SMITH & WESSON K-22 MASTERPIECE REVOLVER MODEL No. 17” and includes the parts list, instructions for use, maintenance information, specifications and guarantee information. When opened, the literature features a large illustration of the Model 17 along with detailed operating, sight-adjustment, care, cleaning and safety information.
An especially useful feature for dating this particular example is the factory printing/form code located in the bottom-left corner of the reverse: 01-1274-55. The “1274” portion is consistent with a December 1974 printing. The literature also carries Smith & Wesson’s Bangor Punta Company identification, appropriate to this period.
This is an original piece of Smith & Wesson factory literature rather than a modern reproduction. Original model-specific paperwork such as this makes an attractive addition to a vintage Smith & Wesson collection and can also help complete a period display containing the appropriate Model 17 revolver box and related factory literature.
Only the printed literature shown is being offered. The handwritten number on the clear storage sleeve is a later inventory/storage notation and is not part of the original Smith & Wesson publication.
Estimated Age
This original Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece Model No. 17 factory literature dates to approximately December 1974.
The primary dating evidence is the printed code 01-1274-55 located at the bottom-left corner of the reverse. The “1274” portion is consistent with a December 1974 printing/date notation. The Bangor Punta Company identification appearing on the literature further supports a 1970s production period.
Unlike an estimate based solely on the years the Model 17 was manufactured, this date is based on a period code printed directly on this particular piece of factory literature.

Note to Collectors
The Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece has long been one of the company's best-known target revolvers. The Model 17 designation was applied to the K-22 Masterpiece after Smith & Wesson began using numerical model designations in the late 1950s, making Model 17 literature an interesting collecting category with numerous printing variations produced over the following decades.
This December 1974 example represents the Bangor Punta period of Smith & Wesson history and provides considerably more than basic operating instructions. It combines the factory parts information, specifications, sight-adjustment information, maintenance procedures, safety information and guarantee material into the traditional Smith & Wesson foldout format.
For collectors attempting to assemble a period-correct Model 17 package, the printed 01-1274-55 code is particularly useful because it provides a much stronger dating reference than simply identifying the general production era of the revolver.
