Offered for consideration is an intriguing vintage equestrian sporting artwork bearing the historic von Schweinitz name and presenting a composition centered on traditional European riding and hunt culture.
The work depicts an elegant arrangement of equestrian objects, including tall riding boots, riding helmet, crop, tack and the unmistakable red hunting coat associated with traditional fox-hunting and equestrian society.
Of particular interest is the handwritten signature/inscription appearing on the work, which appears to include “von Schweinitz.” A date or later notation appearing as “’82” is also present.
POSSIBLE MARIA VON HEIDER-SCHWEINITZ ASSOCIATION
We believe the work warrants further investigation as a possible work associated with or attributable to Maria von Heider-Schweinitz (1894–1974). This attribution has not been authenticated and is not guaranteed.
Maria von Heider-Schweinitz was a German painter associated with Expressive Realism and the generation of German artists whose careers were profoundly disrupted during the National Socialist period and World War II.
Born Johanna Maria Lina Gräfin von Schweinitz und Krain, Freiin von Kauder in Darmstadt in 1894, she received early artistic instruction in Berlin and later studied with sculptors Richard Scheibe and Georg Kolbe. Her encounter with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff became particularly important to her artistic development, and she subsequently devoted herself extensively to painting.
Her documented body of work includes oils, watercolors, tempera and mixed-media works, with examples held and exhibited in Germany and appearing on the international auction market.
THE VON SCHWEINITZ FAMILY
Beyond the possible Maria von Heider-Schweinitz attribution, the von Schweinitz name itself belongs to a historically established German family with centuries of documented European history.
Multiple members and branches of the extended von Schweinitz family have been associated with German cultural, military, diplomatic and professional life. Documented artists also appear within the broader family history.
Interestingly, a branch of the von Schweinitz family later became established in the Augusta/Columbia County region of Georgia and maintained a strong connection with horses, riding and traditional hunt culture.
The present artwork carries an old Carpenter’s Art Gallery, Martinez, Georgia framing label, providing a tangible connection to that same Augusta-area region.
THE “’82” INSCRIPTION
Maria von Heider-Schweinitz died in 1974. Consequently, the apparent “’82” inscription should not automatically be interpreted as a 1982 creation date by Maria.
It may represent a later framing, ownership, collection or other notation; alternatively, the inscription or signature may presently be misinterpreted. Further specialist examination is required.
This discrepancy is disclosed deliberately and should be considered part of the continuing attribution research rather than evidence of confirmed authorship.
COLLECTOR SIGNIFICANCE
This is an unusually interesting research piece combining:
• The von Schweinitz signature/name • Traditional European equestrian and hunt imagery • Historic German family associations • Possible connection to German painter Maria von Heider-Schweinitz (1894–1974) • Augusta-area von Schweinitz equestrian associations • Vintage Martinez, Georgia gallery provenance • An unexplained apparent “’82” inscription worthy of further study
The artwork is being offered as an unverified attribution/research opportunity and is not represented as an authenticated work by Maria von Heider-Schweinitz.
An especially compelling acquisition for collectors of German art, German noble-family history, European equestrian art, sporting art, fox-hunting material, von Schweinitz family history, and works requiring further provenance research.
Sold as pictured and attributed only as described. Prospective collectors are encouraged to conduct their own independent research and authentication.
