A dramatic circle of smoky sparkle, this late 1990s brooch forms an open wreath of deeply faceted acrylic stones in marquise, oval, pear, and round shapes. The slightly irregular arrangement gives the traditional circle-brooch form a more contemporary feel, while smaller deep garnet-red accents punctuate the smoky black-diamond tones.
The stones are acrylic, but their crisp faceting and polished surfaces create the look and light-catching effect of rhinestones. Each stone is individually claw-set into a glossy gunmetal-tone cast setting. Its design draws on the glamorous rhinestone circle brooches popular during the mid-20th century, particularly the 1950s.
The brooch measures 4.5 cm (1.77 inches) in diameter and fastens with a straight pin and rollover clasp. It is in as-new condition. This piece belonged to my Nan.
