Only 10,800 Windsor Newport Coupes were produced in 1956, making this a relatively uncommon piece of Chrysler history.
Designed under legendary Mopar stylist Virgil Exner, the 1956 Chrysler lineup introduced the dramatic “Forward Look” that would define Chrysler styling in the late 1950s. With clean, sweeping lines, open wheel wells, subtle fins, and just the right amount of chrome, these cars looked fast and futuristic even sitting still.
Under the hood, Chrysler’s 331 Polyheqd V-8 provides plenty of power and torque to move this approximately 4,000-pound cruiser down the road with ease.
I’ve owned and driven this Chrysler regularly, including as a reliable daily driver around town. It has also been taken to multiple cruise-ins and local car shows.
I would describe it as a “10-footer”: from about 10 feet away, it presents beautifully, but up close you’ll find flaws, wear, and imperfections in the paint. It is a great car to enjoy as-is while gradually improving it, or it could make an excellent foundation for a full restoration.
I’m selling it simply because other cars have come into my life, and I don’t want this beautiful Chrysler to sit neglected without getting the use it deserves.
Exterior Within the last three months, the sides and roof have been professionally repainted. So unless you’re just wanting to restore or change the color, it should be many years before that paint will have to be renewed. Most of the chrome and stainless trim is in very good condition, with the exception of the front bumper. There is rust in the rockers, around the driver-side rear wheel opening, and in the driver side floors. Floors have had amateur repairs with metal. As with any 70-year-old automobile, there may be additional areas that will require attention. The car is perfectly enjoyable as a driver in its current condition, while also offering plenty of potential for someone looking for a restoration project if that’s would you’d like to do. The wide whitewall tires look nearly new and have very little wear. The car also wears genuine wire wheels, which were available as an extra-cost factory option on these cars.
Interior The interior is very presentable and features the beautifully styled dashboard and cabin Chrysler was known for in this era. The front seat was beginning to show its age, so I installed removable seat covers on the front and rear seats. The carpet and door panels are in nice condition. The dash pad is excellent with no cracks. The painted portions of the dash are nice overall but could benefit from some minor touch-up work. The original headliner remains in place and sags in a couple of areas.
Engine & Running Gear The engine and running gear perform well. I have driven this car regularly and used it as a daily driver without any major issues. Classic-car reliability can sometimes be a challenge, but this Chrysler has proven to be one of the most dependable classic cars I’ve owned. One known issue: after the car has been sitting for a couple of weeks, it will have some lifter noise for the first 5–10 minutes of driving. Once underway, it settles down.
Overall This is a fantastic opportunity to own an increasingly uncommon piece of 1950s Chrysler history. Drive it and enjoy it as-is, take it to cruise-ins and local shows, or use it as the foundation for a restoration. Either way, you’ll be behind the wheel of one of Chrysler’s most distinctive designs from the legendary Forward Look era.
