M114 of Hiram Bithorn-- 1st Puerto Rican national to play in the major leagues. A truly scarce M114- issued in 1943 and almost surely forgotten by 1947 when Hiram left the majors after appearing in only 34 games during his 4 year career. It was a memorable career however--- Bithorn was an MVP candidate after his 1943 season with the Cubs, going 18-12 with 7 shut outs. He would enter the military after that and spend 2 years in the Navy-- he came back to the majors but never regained his old form, pitching only 2 innings in 1947 for the Chicago White Sox before calling it a career. Scarce and rarely seen, Hiram has no other cards or premiums from the 40's except a Puerto Rican issue from 1948-49. Historical, memorial rookie item, not great condition but a great subject. The M114 set is full of rare, significant, special premiums, this is one of them.
