Vintage copy of “Starved Rock Trails”, second edition by Philip E. Vierling, published in 1978.
A vintage hiking and natural-history guide to Starved Rock State Park in Illinois, covering the area’s trails, geology, botany, and natural features. This is the second edition and is part of Philip E. Vierling’s Illinois Country Outdoor Guides series.
It is beautifully illustrated!
This copy has clearly seen some use and appears to have been used as an actual trail guide, making it a particularly evocative piece of vintage Illinois outdoor ephemera.
Condition:
Fair vintage used condition.
The cover has some dirt/soiling, creasing, and general signs of handling. Some interior pages have creases and dog-eared corners, and there are areas of dirt/soiling on some pages.
Many of the maps have red pen circles and X marks, apparently made by a previous owner to mark locations or trails. These markings are part of the item’s present condition and are visible in the photographs.
The guide remains intact and readable, but it shows clear signs of having been used outdoors rather than carefully stored.
Please examine all photos for the best representation of condition.
