Offered is an exceptional documented vintage original oil painting by Illinois artist Dolores E. Ulrich, titled “Winter Quiet” and painted in February 1984.

This atmospheric winter landscape depicts a snow-covered nighttime scene illuminated by a solitary lamppost, with towering bare trees, distant structures and heavy snow rendered in cool blue, lavender, white and muted violet tones. Thick, expressive passages of paint throughout the snow and foreground give the composition considerable texture and depth.

What particularly distinguishes this painting is the original documentation retained with the artwork.

Accompanying the painting is a handwritten card from Dolores E. Ulrich, identifying the work by title and explaining her inspiration:

“Winter Quiet”

“This picture reflects the quiet of a snowfall at night. Painted February 1984.”

The card is signed:

Dolores E. Ulrich
Elgin, Illinois

Also retained with the painting is an original period business card identifying:

Studio D – Art Imports Gifts
Dolores E. Ulrich
Elgin, Illinois

An additional period card from Old Dundee Mall – Creative Arts & Crafts, East Dundee, Illinois, advertising accepted consignments, accompanies the group as part of the painting’s surviving historical material.

The reverse of the artwork further displays its traditional stretched-canvas construction and handwritten dimensional markings. The painted image bears a small “D” monogram/signature at the lower right.

Collector Significance

Unlike an unidentified vintage landscape, Winter Quiet retains unusually strong period documentation connecting the artwork directly with its artist, title, date and Illinois origin.

Current research has not located another readily available painting that can be reliably connected to Dolores E. Ulrich and Studio D of Elgin, making surviving documented examples particularly uncommon on today’s secondary market. This should not be interpreted as a claim that this is the artist’s only surviving work.

The original handwritten artist statement is especially desirable from a provenance standpoint because it preserves Ulrich’s own description of the inspiration behind the composition.

A compelling acquisition for collectors of Illinois regional art, Midwestern artists, vintage American landscapes, winter nocturnes, local Elgin/Dundee history and documented estate artwork.

All original Studio D, artist and Old Dundee Mall materials pictured will accompany the painting and should remain together with the artwork as part of its provenance.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and document the painting, frame, reverse, artist inscription and accompanying historical materials.
