A wonderful antique British Sterling Silver MIZPAH double-heart brooch, richly decorated with applied floral details and a traditional sentimental inscription.

Formed as two adjoining hearts, the brooch is an especially attractive example of Victorian sentimental jewellery.

One heart carries the raised word “MIZPAH” above an elaborate arrangement of applied flowers, foliage and a decorative basket motif. Contrasting warm rose and yellow-gold coloured details stand beautifully against the silver background.

The second heart is framed with warm rose-gold coloured decoration and bears the traditional Mizpah sentiment:

“The Lord watch between me & thee when we are absent one from another.”

The word Mizpah became strongly associated with sentimental jewellery and symbolised an enduring bond between people separated by distance, making pieces such as this particularly meaningful keepsakes.

The reverse carries British silver hallmarks including the lion passant for Sterling Silver, together with additional maker/date marks visible in the photographs.
