White remains the only Australian to have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in 1973, and The Tree of Man is the novel that established his international reputation. It follows Stan and Amy Parker from the turn of the century as they carve a farm out of bush near a growing Australian city, and traces the family across generations. The title comes from A.E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad, quoted in the text. The novel won the Australian Literature Society's award for the best novel of 1956.

The American edition appeared in August 1955; Eyre & Spottiswoode published in Britain the following April, making this the first British printing. The jacket artwork is by Don Finley, and the rear panel carries the original 1955 review notices from the New York Times Book Review, New York Herald-Tribune, New York Post and others.

Provenance: the front pastedown carries the original bookseller's label of A. McLeod, Bookseller, Brisbane & Rockhampton — Queensland retail provenance on an Australian literary landmark.
